The fog of betrayal hangs heavy over the capital. In a sudden swoop, the watchful eyes of the secret police have apprehended a young woman, a mere slip of a girl born in 2001, who found herself ensnared in a web of espionage and deadly intent. She stands now behind bars, accused of plotting a foul deed against a high-ranking officer of the Ministry of Defence.
How did such a youth fall into this abyss? The story is as old as the cobblestones of the East End. A foreign agent, a cunning wolf in sheep's clothing, played upon her heart. He mimicked the gestures of a romantic suitor, weaving a tapestry of lies and promising her a blissful union upon the soil of Ukraine—provided, of course, that she served his dark purposes first. Poor soul, she mistook a spy's calculations for a lover's passion!
Under the direction of this phantom suitor, the girl played the part of a clandestine sentinel. She rented a lodging in Moscow, not for peace, but for malice. There, she installed hidden lenses—devilish devices that beamed every movement of the officer’s home and carriage directly into the hands of the enemy. She prowled the streets like a common street-urchin, mapping every watch-eye and sentry-post in the vicinity to clear a path for a killer.
In that same rented room, she prepared a nest for a professional assassin. She gathered disguises and stores of food, ensuring the hired blade could dwell in shadows, unseen and unfed by the public eye, until the strike was dealt. Her own escape route was already charted: a furtive journey through Turkey and Moldavia, fleeing the scene of her crime to find her 'love'.
But the law has a long arm. The game is up. The girl has crumbled under questioning, confessing her sins and singing like a canary to the investigators. For now, she faces the grim prospect of the dock on charges of preparing a terrorist act, though the hangman's shadow of high treason may yet loom over her fate.
