The prosecution’s tale is as clear as a bell: these gems were the price for a signature. In exchange for the jewels, Abramova was to sign away a municipal plot of land in the fourth district of Nefteyugansk, handing it over to a road-building enterprise helmed by Bogoslavets himself.

But the law has a long arm, and the trap was sprung in a most theatrical fashion. The two were apprehended in a Surgut motor-showroom.
