Pray, cast your eyes upon the tragicomedy of the Tyumen Bread Combine! It is a story that would make even the most hardened clerk at the East India Company weep with laughter. Imagine, if you will, a gentleman of commerce who believed that one might bake loaves of bread using the Bank's gold as yeast, without ever intending to return the principal!
Our protagonist, the esteemed Bread Combine, together with a merry band of accomplices—certain Messieurs Melnik, Khleb-S, Alur, and the enterprising brothers Sargsyan—have managed the extraordinary feat of owing the Sberbank of Russia some five hundred and seventeen million rubles. One must admire the sheer audacity of such a debt! It is not merely a loan; it is a veritable mountain of promissory notes, a tower of bills of exchange reaching toward the heavens.
In a fit of righteous indignation, the bank, acting as the aggrieved party, rushed to the Curgan Arbitration Court. They begged the magistrate to seize the properties of these imaginative merchants, fearing that their precious gold had vanished into thin air, perhaps transformed into invisible sourdough. However, the Court, in a gesture of inexplicable mercy, refused to grant the arrest of the assets. One can only imagine the sigh of relief that escaped the lips of our dear swindlers upon hearing this news!
But alas, the feast is over. The Bread Combine has found itself besieged by an army of creditors. From February to August, no fewer than twenty-five lawsuits descended upon them like a swarm of hungry locusts. Gas companies, navigation experts, and energy providers all clamoured for their few remaining farthings.
The final blow, however, came from the Tax Office of Bashkortostan, which filed for the enterprise's bankruptcy. Consequently, the ovens have grown cold, the flour has settled, and the production has ceased entirely. It appears that while our merchant was busy dreaming of grand profits and lavish banquets, he forgot the most fundamental rule of the Bourse: one cannot live on credit alone when the banker finally demands his coin!
