Pray, lend your attention to the most extraordinary chronicles of the New World! It appears that the gentlemen of the American counting-houses have reached a state of opulence that would make Croesus himself blush with modesty. The esteemed Wall Street Journal has seen fit to publish a ledger of these fortunes, and the results are nothing short of a comedic opera.
Consider, if you will, the case of Mr. Jack Dorsey, a gentleman of substantial means and a director of the firm known as Block. In a stroke of wit that would delight any satirist, Mr. Dorsey occupies the post of 'Block Head'—a term which, in the common tongue, designates a most utter blockhead or a simpleton. And lo! This 'blockhead' is paid a salary of precisely two dollars and seventy-five cents!
One might imagine this poor soul to be a pauper, perhaps clutching his last few pennies in a cold fog, were it not for the fact that his personal coffers swell with some eight billion dollars. What a magnificent jest! A man pretends to be a pauper in the eyes of the law, while his wealth could purchase half of London's livery stables!
But behold the opposite extreme of this financial carnival! There is Mr. Elon Musk, a merchant-adventurer of the Tesla variety, whose appetite for profit is truly gargantuan. It is whispered in the corridors of the Exchange that his compensation package may reach the dizzying sum of one trillion dollars, provided certain conditions of growth are met.
Indeed, the board of his Joint-Stock Company has already seen fit to promise him ninety-six million shares, a hoard valued at some twenty-nine billion dollars, should he remain in his counting-house for a mere two years.
One cannot help but admire the audacity of these modern speculators. While the humble clerk toils for a pittance, these grandees play a game of numbers so vast that the very ink on their bills of exchange must surely be made of liquid gold. Truly, the world is a stage, and the American financier is its most comical actor!
