A Fallen Matron’s Plea: The Disgraced Rector and the Royal Mercy

The fog of scandal has long clung to the halls of the Northern State Medical University, and now, the heavy iron gates of the penitentiary hold one of its former luminaries. Lyubov Gorbatova, once the formidable Rector, now finds herself a prisoner of the Crown's justice, convicted of a most scandalous embezzlement.

In a gesture of utmost desperation, the fallen lady has dispatched a petition for clemency to the highest authority in the land, President Vladimir Putin. She clings to her honour as a drowning man clings to a plank, swearing by the heavens that she ever performed her duties with a conscientious heart.

"I have always sought to walk the straight and narrow path of the law," she pleads, her words echoing from the bleakness of her confinement. "No greedy desire guided my hand; I stole not a single farthing for my own gain."

Indeed, a great clamour has arisen in her defence. More than two thousand souls—from the pious clergy to her own former pupils and the Pardon Commission of the Vologda province—have signed their names to her cause, hoping to see the lady restored to her liberty.

But the ledger of the law is cold. Back in the year 2024, the air grew thick with suspicion as a pro-rector and three other university clerks were hauled before the magistrates on charges of fraud. At first, Gorbatova was but a witness, summoned to answer questions by the keen-eyed detectives of the day. In an act of perceived charity, she engaged a solicitor to defend those innocent employees who had no part in the mischief.

Alas, the scales of justice tipped against her. The very act of paying for legal counsel became her undoing. On the 6th of February, 2026, the court in Arkhangelsk delivered its verdict with a gavel's crash: the payment of one million and three hundred thousand roubles for legal services was deemed a misappropriation of funds. The sentence was swift and severe—two years of hard labour in a colony, leaving the former Rector to ponder her fate in the silence of a cell.
