The fog hung heavy over the cobblestones, but a darker cloud descended upon a poor elderly soul in our sprawling metropolis. A woman of advanced years, honest and trusting, has been most cruelly fleeced of over twenty-one million rubles by a gang of telephone scoundrels. Such is the wickedness of the modern age, as recounted by the city's procurators.

It began with a common ruse. A rogue, posing as a mere repairman of door-bells, gained the lady's confidence. With a silver tongue, he coaxed her into revealing a secret code. Soon after, a warning flashed upon her device—a phantom alert of fraud—directing her to a number where the trap lay waiting.

Upon dialing, the poor creature was instantly connected to a pretender, a man masquerading as a high official of the financial courts. He spoke of forged powers of attorney and threatened her with the cold iron of a prison cell. Terrified and trembling, the matron did as she was bid. Under the guise of 'security,' she was forced to install a strange mechanical application to communicate with these pseudo-constables.

Driven by panic, the woman swept every last farthing from her bank accounts and sold her worldly possessions. In a scene of true desperation, she handed the vast sum of gold to a young girl, a mere courier of four-and-twenty years. For a paltry ten thousand rubles—a pittance for such a crime—this girl played the part of the middleman, whisking the loot away into the invisible ether of 'crypto-purses' as commanded by her hidden masters.

Our diligent detectives and the city’s watch finally laid hands upon the girl. She now faces the full rigor of the law under the statutes of fraud. Yet, as for the masterminds—the true architects of this misery—they remain as ghosts in the smog, their whereabouts unknown to the procuracy.

Alas, this is no solitary tragedy. Only recently, a similarly wretched fate befell an old gentleman in the distant reaches of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. He, too, was seduced by the 'door-bell' trick and surrendered two million rubles to the void. Truly, the streets are teeming with villains who prey upon the frail!
