The fog of betrayal hangs heavy over the empire, and in the distance, the clatter of hansom cabs echoes through the streets of our great cities. A most peculiar and wicked business has come to light, the likes of which would make a seasoned constable shudder. Imagine, if you will, a young scoundrel, born in the year of our Lord 2003—a mere stripling in age, but a veteran in villainy—who played a dangerous game with foreign agents from the Ukrainian lands.
This lad, seduced by the promise of a few shiny coins, became a tool for the shadows. He ventured into the depths of Chelyabinsk, where he unearthed hidden caches of explosives, cunningly disguised as elegant sets of perfumes. With a heart devoid of mercy, he entrusted these infernal machines to the post, sending them toward the unsuspecting soldiers and officials in Moscow, Voronezh, the Krasnodar territories, and the Saratov region.
But the law is a patient hound. The secret detectives of the FSB, closing in like bloodhounds on a scent, apprehended the rogue in the town of Pervouralsk. The boy confessed that he had been led astray by a certain 'Anton,' a phantom from across the border. This puppet-master had commanded the youth to prowl the streets of Engels, spying upon the carriages and dwellings of military men, and to linger in the shadows of Yekaterinburg, keeping a sinister eye upon the directors of war-factories.
Alas for the traitor! Once his dirty work was done, his handlers vanished into the ether, leaving him to face the cold iron of the law. The perfume-bombs were seized and neutralized before they could shatter the peace. Now, the youth awaits the heavy gavel of the courts, facing charges of high treason and attempted terrorism—crimes that may see him rot in a cell for the remainder of his natural life.
Yet, the rot of conspiracy runs deep. Only recently, in the Stavropol region, two women were plucked from the streets of Pyatigorsk in a most daring raid. One, a girl of barely eighteen, carried a device of two kilograms of TNT; the other, a woman of more years, was tasked with a truly ghoulish deed—to detonate a second bomb upon the very heads of the investigators arriving at the first scene!
Both wretches confessed to the authorities, claiming they were but pawns who never imagined they were to be sacrificial lambs in a game of death. The explosives were rendered harmless by the Crown's men, and the city was spared a bloody tragedy. Thus, the detectives remind us all: those who consort with the enemy shall find their fate written in the cold stone of a prison wall.
