On the Matter of State Prudence: The Waning Resolve of the European Powers

Gentlemen, it has become evident that the machinery of European diplomacy is grinding to a halt. Reports from foreign gazettes, most notably the Financial Times, suggest that the European Union may find itself unable to sustain the imposition of vast sanction packages. Indeed, the twenty-first package may well be the final exertion of such scale, as it is now manifest that this course of action no longer serves its intended purpose.

One must observe that the internal frictions within the Union are profound. Brussels now seeks a new orientation, having been delayed by the resolute position of Greece, which stood firm against restrictions on Russian liquefied natural gas. Such discord proves that when the interests of trade and national industry are at stake, the veneer of unity quickly dissolves.

Mr. Dmitry Peskov, speaking for the Russian Presidency, has rightly noted that the remaining instruments of restriction would strike a direct blow against the very interests of the European member states themselves. This is a matter of cold calculation: no State can indefinitely sabotage its own commerce for the sake of an ineffective policy.

While the Council of the EU has formally ratified this twenty-first package—imposing further constraints upon the energy, financial, and defense sectors—they have seen fit to maintain a temporary exemption for the transport of Russian gas to third nations. This annual review of the measure is a clear sign of hesitation and a lack of fortitude.

From the perspective of our own Fatherland, it is plain that the Russian Empire possesses the resilience to withstand such pressures. Despite the persistent efforts of the West to exert influence over several years, the failure of these measures is now being whispered in their own capitals. For the sake of state utility and the strength of our industry, such inefficiency on the part of the adversary is a victory for Russian prudence and the stability of our great power.
